Wayland Gym first Kentucky Site to Host Hometown Teams Smithsonian Exhibit

Wayland High School — home of “King” Kelly Coleman, Kentucky’s first Mr. Basketball — is the first of 15 Kentucky locations to host the Smithsonian Institution’s “Hometown Teams” exhibit. The Wayland Gym is located in Wayland, Kentucky of Floyd County. The exhibit will be displayed in the adjacent auxiliary building to the gym.

The Hometown Teams exhibit is one series of Smithsonian’s Museum on Main Street traveling exhibits. According to their site, “The Hometown Teams traveling exhibit examines the many roles that sports play in American society. Hometown sports are more than just games — they shape our lives and unite us and celebrate who we are as Americans.”

Along with national relics of sports teams past, each Hometown Teams exhibit will feature local sports history, so something new can be experienced at each location. I’m certain that the Wayland Exhibit will be fantastic — featuring memorabilia from trophies of Inez High School’s state champ to King Kelly’s Letterman jacket. You may even luck out and score a tour of the Wayland Gym from the city’s mayor and Mountain Sports Hall of Fame founder, Jerry Fultz.

Rumor has it that King Kelly himself will even make an appearance… wouldn’t that be a nice treat?
