There were some positives from Saturday’s match up with Southern Miss and there were some question marks that remain unanswered.
On the positive side
Matt Elam played his best game as a Wildcat. Elam had four tackles for the Wildcats (one for a loss) and made his presence known. This was the Elam Wildcat fans had been waiting to see.
Defense held Southern Miss to 55 yards on 38 carries. The guys answered the question many perceived as a weak area for this team.
Fans watched the game as the raining was pouring down in Kentucky while in Hattiesburg the temperature teetered around 84 degrees. Cramping was a problem, even before the half, however the depth of this team helped alleviate any major gains as players were sidelined.
We have a punter! Matt Panton averaged 42 yards and had five punts inside the 20 and only one touchback. Fans do not have to hold their breath any longer when the punt team takes the field.
On the negative side
The absence of Jon Toth and Cole Mosier was felt all day on the O-line. Blocks were missed and often the holes weren’t created for the backs. Coach Schlarman will be making adjustments this week. These areas can be fixed.
It was the first game of the season and personally I would be happy not to see the “Wildcat” again for awhile. If it doesn’t work the first twenty times then it is probably not going to work.
The Cats will make their season debut on Kroger Field against Eastern Saturday at noon. The game has also been designated by U.K. as Heroes Day. There are still tickets available to come out and thank those who have served our country and cheer on the CATS.
The Southeastern Conference’s new league-wide clear bag policy will be in place for Kentucky football’s home opener on Saturday.
Each fan will be permitted to carry one large clear bag – either a one-gallon Ziploc-style bag or a 12” x 6” x 12” clear bag – plus a small clutch that does not exceed 4.5” x 6.5”. The small clutch allows privacy for small personal items and is also easily searched.
Rocko is shown with a clear UK bag which meets the guidelines. These bags are available for purchase through the UK Bookstore.
Additionally, fans not carrying any bags will be able to enter Kroger Field through specially marked bag-free express lanes at each gate.
