Cats Handle the Blazers 69-58

Before the game write up I feel it most important to wish Coach Joe B. Hall a Happy Birthday.  Tomorrow, December 30th Coach Hall turns 91 years young.

On any given year fans would simply assume that tonight would be a win, mark it down.  Cats by 90.  However, this year is different.  Nothing is given…it must be earned (lol).  That is why you play the games.  Just ask Duke and Stephen F. Austin.

The CATS were in control from tip-off tonight.  The showed energy focus out of the gate and if one didn’t look at the scoreboard one would think they were up by 20.  Then glancing at the score it was would be realized they were only by 6 or 8 points.

This was the first game without Nate Sestina.  It was chance for Cal to “tinker” with lineups and a chance for “the next man up” to take a step.   Whitney and Brooks took turns rotating in and out of lineups and showed glimpses of what they become.  It is just going to take time.

TAKEAWAYS FROM THE GAME

  • EJ Montgomery started the game making shots and when EJ has that confidence from the  beginning it carries him throughout the game.  He held his own in the paint and shots continued to go down for him.
  • The Junior Nick Richards  did not disappoint tonight.  The guy has taken his game to a different level. There is no pouting or head hanging.  This Nick Richards is here to stay.
  • Whatever injury has been nagging Hagans seems to be in the latter of the healing stages.  His latteral movement much improved tonight.
  • Both Richards and Montgomery had 16 points tonight.  A good sign for the big men.
  • This team has some maturing to do but it’s on November and nothing matters until March, right?

Kentucky has two more home games before heading out West to take on Utah and Ohio State. Then on December 28th the Cards come to Rupp. Oh what a day that will be.
