Briscoe Or Nerlens? Whose Oxford Accomplishment Is More Impressive?

The Kentucky Wildcats continued their winning ways against the Ole Miss Rebels in Oxford last night with a 99-76 victory in the sparkling new Pavilion at Ole Miss. That makes eight consecutive wins for Kentucky over Ole Miss and Isaiah Briscoe was the story. Malik Monk was sensational again, pouring in 34 points in a variety of jaw dropping ways.

However, the still rare UK triple-double takes the cake.

Historically, triple-doubles are rare in Kentucky basketball. This season is an exception and even with that De’Aaron Fox and Isaiah Briscoe have still made SEC history.

Briscoe was perfect from beyond the arc (1 for 1) and at the free-throw line (6 for 6). These are things that simply couldn’t have been said about him at this time last year. It’s truly a testament to the time he spent working on his game in the off-season.

This is the second outstanding performance by a Wildcat in Oxford in five seasons.

Remember Nerlens Noels’ defensive masterpiece where he turned back 12 Ole Miss shot attempts in 2013?

Which one of these accomplishments is more impressive to you?

The circumstances for each were different. The 2013 team Noel was on was different from the current squad that Briscoe is on now. In 2013 Kentucky had taken some lumps and went to Oxford unranked while Ole Miss was ranked No. 16 in the nation.

Briscoe and the Cats are currently ranked No. 8.

For hypothetical (and fun) reasons, let’s say that Noel had only blocked five shots and Ole Miss had been able to convert on their other seven shot attempts. If that had happened, Kentucky’s 87-74 win could have instead been an 88-87 defeat. Noel’s five blocks would have still been impressive but they would have been all for naught.

Last night Kentucky imposed their will on Ole Miss from the outset and removed the doubt of the outcome rather quickly. That still doesn’t diminish the accomplishment of Briscoe’s triple-double.

Contrary to what Oklahoma City Thunder guard Russell Westbrook would have you think, triple-doubles are very hard to acquire. Isaiah Briscoe’s achievement is kind of a big deal.

So which one is more impressive in your mind?

There really isn’t a wrong answer, but it’s fun to compare and contrast the two.
