Kentucky defeats Alabama – Women’s Gymnastics

On Friday, February 10, the 10th ranked University of Kentucky Gymnastics team hosted six time national champion and #6 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide. It was Father Daughter Date Night in Memorial Coliseum, with UK having different activities focused on daddies and their little girls. So I took my two girls, Sarah and Lauren, with me to check out the meet between not only two of the best gymnastics teams in the SEC, but in the country.

The evening did not disappoint. From the first event, Cats on Vault and the Tide on the Bars, Kentucky took the lead in the meet. Which was huge because up until Friday, Alabama was 70-0 all-time vs. Kentucky Gymnastics. While there were plenty of activities for fathers and daughters (t-shirt and flower giveaways, a dance-off), it was clear that the Cats came to not only compete, but to make history.

History was made Friday night as the Wildcats defeated the Crimson Tide by a score of 197.475 – 197.050.

Here are thoughts from my junior correspondents:

Kentucky started on the vault and Alabama started on the uneven bars. 6 people for every event. They only add up the top 5 scores. Then they switch. They play songs during breaks or warm ups. A lot of people were there routing for Kentucky, and very few people were there for Alabama. They all get to put input on the uniform. There are many to gymnastics. They can get up on the bars differently.

Alex Hyland is ranked 4th best in the country. They get to choose their own music and routine for the beam and the floor. They also get to choose their own routine for the uneven bars. You also get an extra person to go and they are called exhibitions . Exhibitions don’t count. The cheer team was there. You have to be really flexible to be in gymnastics. Mollie Korth just started in December. Sidney Dukes and Alex Hyland are really good at gymnastics. We met Mila and she was on the gymnastics team . We asked her questions about  the gymnastic team and about gymnastics. The head coach is Tim Garrison. Kentucky made history because this was the 1st time in forever that we won against Alabama. Now it’s 1-70. Hope you enjoyed this!

Activities : face paint, american girl doll giveaways, Daddy daughter dance, UK gymnastic shirt giveaways

Mollie Korth is one of the gymnast at Kentucky. She graduated earlier from high school  and became one of the UK gymnast in December. Mollie came 1st in the vault, Uneven bars, Floor Exercise, and All-Around.

Kentucky won by .420. This was UK’s first time win against Alabama.
