Kentucky Baseball Continues to Show Out

This isn’t the first time I’ve written about the Kentucky baseball team continuing to do something. Earlier in the season I wrote about how they continued to bounce back from the 2016 season with improved play in 2017. They kept that theme going into the second half of the SEC season by taking two out of three against LSU right after they evened the score with in-state Louisville at home.

Up next, another ranked opponent (that’s life in the SEC). This time it was a weekend series on the road against South Carolina. Now it was only one game, the opening game of the series, but goodness gracious. What a series opening statement it was.

No, that isn’t a misprint. Kentucky took game one 19-1, belting out 20 hits in the process and making school history along the way.

Kentucky achieved its most dominant SEC victory in the same game in which Nick Mingione became the first UK baseball coach to win 30 games in his debut season. That’s how you kill two birds with one stone.

The Cats torched the Gamecocks from every corner of the batting order as Tristan Pompey, Troy Squires, Connor Heady and Luke Becker went a combined 12-17 with four home runs, and 14 RBI.

Kentucky’s dominating effort is put into even clearer perspective when you look at the tweets from media members who cover South Carolina. Mike Gillespie of ABC Columbia didn’t mince words.

As mentioned it was only one game, but it definitely turned a lot of heads. South Carolina’s baseball pedigree is legit. No doubt Coach Mingione and the Cats are on to the next one but everyone else is still buzzing about this one.

In a few hours UK hopes to have another series wrapped up before they even get to Sunday. If they keep doing what they’re doing, these good results will, you guessed it, continue.
