Derek Willis Will Be Spacing the Floor For the Detroit Pistons

Derek Willis has agreed to take his talents to the Motor City.

Since John Calipari has arrived in Lexington the basketball season no longer ends at the conclusion of March Madness. For the past seven years everyone has adjusted their fandom accordingly to see where the newest crop of former Cats land in the NBA Draft.

Then all eyes focus in on the NBA Summer League to see the guys in action prior to the start of their upcoming rookie seasons. This includes the Cats whose names weren’t called during the draft.

Derek Willis’ name is being called a lot today and it’s also drying on a newly signed one-year deal with the Detroit Pistons.

ESPN’s Chris Haynes broke the news.

Willis confirmed the report by retweeting Haynes’ tweet.

Rod Beard of The Detroit News provided a few more details.

Willis averaged 3.5 points, 2.0 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 0.8 steals in his 11 minutes per game in the NBA Summer League. Detroit finished with a 37-45 record, good for 10 in the Eastern Conference. Their 101.3 points per game put them at a not so good 26th place in the NBA. If he stays with Detroit or moves on to another squad it’s still good to see that he’s signed a deal.

His perimeter shooting could be a welcome sight for a team that needs to find ways to put the ball in the basket. If he has to start out on the G League squad so be it. Hopefully he continues to work hard and stays ready. Everyone will play him to let it fly from deep, but we all know that he can unleash a poster on dudes from time to time too.

Congrats Derek.
