2017 Football Media Days

The media gathered at Kroger Field this afternoon for the 2017 Football Media Days. The official day that the drought of summer ends and anticipation for the UK football season begins.

The usual conversations could be heard amongst the media:

“How was your summer?”
“Can’t believe it’s time to start all over again.”
“Are you making that first road trip to Hattiesburg?”

Media day never provides breaking news or game plans. Head Coach Stoops, Offensive Coordinator Gran and Defensive Coordinator House provided quotes that will be used during the next few weeks as kickoff approaches on September 2nd in Hattiesburg.

Perhaps the biggest news was the verification from Coach Stoops that Lynn Bowden is still MIA from Lexington.  Bowden is possible the biggest recruit of the Stoops era at UK and despite rumors, Stoops confirmed that Bowden has not arrived yet.  Stoops anticipates his arrival next week.  Stay tuned…

Coach Stoops

“I really like where we’re at now compared to last year. I just feel the ownership, the leadership is different, it’s very strong.”

“There’s competition at every position, every day.” (quarterback)

“Benny does not like to get hit. He’s just tough. He hates to get tackled. He’s very competitive. Every yard means something to him…He’s very competitive, goes hard on every snap on every day.”

Coach Gran

“Just relax and go out there. He was the starting QB here. That’s hard to do. He got hurt, he came back and got cleared. Compete. Compete for a starting position. I think that’s the best way to say it. There is no other way. Always be ready. You never know.” (to Drew Barker)

“He was out there working, really doing a great job with the young receivers. He was out there every Saturday. He was that guy. It doesn’t matter to me if he’s vocal or not, it just matters what you do on the practice field.”

Coach Gran stressed that if Stephen Johnson’s fumbling issues continue he will not play.

Coach House

“Kash is moving around better. I think [Strength] Coach Ed has done a great job with him this summer. I anticipate him taking the next step. The thing about Kash is, he played a lot as a freshman, which as you know, is not easy in the SEC.”

“At the end of the day, it starts and stops with getting the ball back.”

Coach House will be in the box during games this season.

It’s almost football time in the Bluegrass!
