Centre College was the final tune-up for the CATS before they begin the regular season. The crowd was light and the eRUPPtion Zone was far from full but the CATS took the floor against the Colonels with one objective: to work on their game.
Centre fought hard throughout the game and never backed down. They drove to the basket and fought for loose balls. They competed and from the look on their faces, it was a special night, not only for the players but for their families.
Coach Mason appeared at the postgame press conference with Lucy, his 6-month-old daughter in his arms. He thanked the University of Kentucky staff for the opportunity to play tonight. “Being 8 of 14 isn’t too bad against those guys. This was an awesome night for Centre basketball.”
Cal stressed many times that there still was a long way to go. “I have both my feet on the panic button.”
Wenyen Gabriel was “feeling it.” There was no hesitation as he swished three after three and defended the paint relentlessly. He is confident and perhaps sending a message to Coach Cal that he deserves playing time.
Quade Green is the leader of the team. The likeness of his game with that of Tyler Ulis cannot go unnoticed. It is the kind of swag one has when they are not necessarily the biggest but they have more heart than all others. He drives, passes and hits the three. He never loses his focus and does what it take to make those around him better.
The season officially begins next Friday. Be ready BBN. This team is special.
