For the UK fans that can’t get to see the Cats play in person, ESPN’s College Game Day is a wonderful opportunity to get inside Rupp Arena and cheer like crazy. With a crowd that filled the lower arena on one side and hundreds more in the end zones and on the opposite side of the court, ESPN had a very successful kickoff to their 2018 season. For some young fans, it was their first visit to the hallowed halls of Rupp and for one young boy, in particular, it was the perfect way to celebrate his birthday.
Tina Cox, Terry Brown and I got to see our 23-time National Champion Kentucky cheerleaders, and we really enjoyed the clever signs brought in by many fans. While we tried our best to get a picture with the traveling gnome, we always seemed to be just a step slow catching up with it.
The “Kiss Cam” suggestions made by the Game Day crew (Rece Davis, Seth Greenberg, Jay Bilas, and Jay Williams) were very entertaining as they noted some duos that could use a little love between one another. The combo of John Calipari and Hamidou Diallo was amusing but the big hit was Jay Bilas and Mark Emmert.
The highlight of the show was the segment with Coach Cal whose comments brought loud cheers from the crowd on several occasions. Greenberg, who had earlier in the week made some less than flattering remarks about the 2018 Cats received a loud chorus of boos when he arrived. In the end, when everyone made their picks for tonight’s game versus Florida, Jay Williams was the hero as he was the only one to predict Kentucky as the victor. Jay, you’re more than welcome to come back anytime you like!
