Much has been written about the UK signee this year. Most of what has been written about her has been about her many accolades and how well she is performing on the court. The All-state, 6-1, senior is a front-runner for Miss Basketball, and she is among the top scoring leaders in the state. She is leading her 26-2 Harlan County Lady Bears in scoring with little over 25ppg, shooting 59% from the field, and as a guard, she is second on her team in rebounding with almost 7rpg . This agile perimeter threat is living up to her billing. After a disappointing showing last year as the runner-up to crosstown rival Harlan, the Lady Bears, who are 16-0 against regional competition, are poised to win the 13th Regional Championship But what makes her tick? Who is Blair Green?
The one side that most of BBN are familiar with consists of her success on the court, but there is more to Blair than being a basketball star. She was voted Miss Harlan County for her school by her peers, and she is their current Homecoming Queen. She is apparently well-liked at her school. Blair is very involved with clubs at her school, she offers her time at the Boys and Girls club eight hours a month, and when she arrives at UK, she will have 18 hours of college credit hours. She has a big personality, and it is the time that the rest of the state gets to know “the other side” of Blair. Via Assistant Coach Jill Harris, I gave Blair a list of ‘off the wall’ questions that would help me gain insight into this other side.
If you could be any animal in the world, what animal would you be and why? “I would be a kangaroo because when they’re babies they get to go around in their mom’s pouches and I really like the movie, Kangaroo Jack.” Harlan County girls’ head coach is Blair’s mother, Debbie Hoskins Green. She has played for her mom (and dad) throughout her basketball career. They have an extraordinary relationship that encompasses more than just Mother/Daughter.
What is your go-to snack/comfort food? Why? “Doritos. Nacho cheese Doritos. They’re addicting.” Blair loves to snack, and it isn’t unusual to see her during pregame on the bench with a bag of chips.
What does your pre-game consist of? (food, music, etc.). “A hot ham and cheese from Subway, or rice and chicken. I love listening to “Relationship” by Young Thug/Future.” She has to have a cast-iron stomach to be able to snack and eat before a game. Most players seem to steer clear of food before a game. I know that if I had eaten chicken and rice before a game, it would not have been pretty DURING the game.
What do you want to be when you grow up? “A weather girl, but not just any weather girl. THE Weather Girl on the Weather Channel.” This answer took me by complete surprise. Personally, I have never met someone who wanted to be a meteorologist, but I can see Blair with her bigger than life personality excelling in front of a camera. Just remember the “little people” when you get famous!
You’re a color in the crayon box. What color would you be and why? “Pink because it is my favorite color.” If you have ever met Blair in person, you know she is a stunning beauty. She is just the right amount of girly and gritty that allows her to shine on the floor and off. Did I mention that she is the Homecoming Queen?
On average, how many times a week do you hurt yourself trying to dance in the shower? “Zero because I’m just a good dancer.”
Who is your favorite Spice Girl? Why? “I’ve heard their songs, but I don’t know the individual singers.” Oh… This one got me. It broke my heart. An entire generation that doesn’t know and love the Spice Girls. For myself, it would be Scary Spice. I loved the leopard and the attitude. Someone get Blair a copy of Spice, stat!
What’s your favorite Snapchat filter? Why? “The one with the big smile/teeth or the one with the animal- like a prairie dog or whatever it is.” Snapchat is a form of social media that is extremely popular with the younger generation. You can “snap” pictures or videos of yourself and send them to your friends. In 10 seconds or less, they disappear. Snapchat has filters that can distort your features, change your voice, make you look like a prairie dog, or even make you look like a flower goddess. The filters that Blair stated she liked best furthers my belief that she is has a “life of the party” personality. Instead of a Weather Girl, she could be a comedian.
If you could trade places with any other person for a week, famous or not, living or dead, real or fictional, with whom would it be? “Fat Amy off of Pitch Perfect.” Fat Amy is played by Rebel Wilson. She is loud, eccentric, and HILARIOUS. She keeps the audience in stitches. I can see why someone with a big personality would gravitate to her character. “Life of the Party” types should stick together.
If you could be a superhero, what would you want your superpowers to be? “Being invisible and super strength. But I’d like to fly, too.” So basically she wants to be an invisible version of Super Girl. Super Strength would help her succeed in the SEC. I can see why someone like Blair, who has been in the spotlight for years, would elect to be “invisible.” It must be difficult at times to be scrutinized for every mistake or bad game.
Do you believe in Bigfoot? Why? Have you seen one? “Yeah because I thought I saw him in my backyard while I was on the phone with a coach and I ran inside.” If there is a Bigfoot, I believe that he would live in the Appalachian Mountains or the forests surrounding them. I can imagine the conversation that Blair had with the coach when she explained why she was squealing and out of breath. “Yeah, basketball is great, but I just saw Bigfoot in my backyard!” Coach:
What is your favorite thing to do with your friends? “We make music videos sometimes… goofy music videos.” Considering she wants to swap places with Fat Amy, she chooses the prairie dog filter, and her claim to be a good dancer, I could see this. She and her friends should do a music video to “Wannabe” by the Spice Girls…. Hey, I am just saying.
What is your favorite movie/TV show? Why? “Madea movies because I love Madea.” Madea movies are pure comedy gold. They are irreverent and goofy. Are you beginning to see a pattern in Blair’s answers? She has to be serious and focused on the court. Off the court, she likes to cut loose. Madea movies suit what we have learned about her thus far. She loves to laugh and have a good time.
What misconception about you do people have that you want to set straight? “I’m pretty open with everyone. I don’t know that there are any.” After diving into all the other questions, I can see Blair as an open book. She seems like a girl on the verge of greatness.
In the upcoming weeks, Blair Green will play her last games as a Lady Bear. She will receive many honors as her high school career comes to an end; like All-state recognition and various All-tournament teams. But, she is so much more. She is intelligent, witty, compassionate, and is destined to be a BBN fan favorite. I wish her and her teammates good luck in their upcoming games. To Blair, I hope you enjoy this ride. Laugh. Be goofy. Eat Doritos. I cannot wait to see you in the blue and white.*
