Cats Win the War, But Lose the Last Battle at The Cliff

It’s always great to go out on top.  But if today’s contest versus Mississippi State ends up being the last game played at The Cliff, then going out on top is not the ending for the storied stadium.   While the Cats managed to win the weekend series, taking 2 of 3 games from MSU, Sunday’s finale was certainly not what the team wanted to give the fans as a parting gift as they fell to the Bulldogs 18-8.

Kentucky celebrated The Cliff and its history all season with many former players and coaches making appearances at various times during the year.  There have been trading cards and collectible koozies.  But they definitely saved the best for last as fans were given a chance to throw out a “final pitch” after the game today and then take home a souvenir ball.

Despite losing today, Kentucky is still in good shape to be a regional host when the NCAA post-season begins.  As Coach Mingione noted today, the Cats have three series wins over Top 10 teams.  That should tip the scales in favor of the Cats when hosts are selected.  Kentucky also has an opportunity to beef up their resume’ as they play Murray State on Tuesday night and then travel to Nashville for the season-ending series against the Vanderbilt Commodores.  Picking up a couple of more wins in the SEC Tournament (May 22-27) would also go a long way for Mingione’s troops.

For now, you can enjoy the great photo gallery that CMR’s Hunter Mitchell created from his visit to The Cliff today and continue to cheer on the Cats.  Their work this season is not finished and hopefully, their time at The Cliff will be extended just a few more games.
