Kentucky Football: Florida Gators 29, Kentucky Wildcats 21

In a game of wild momentum swings, the University of Florida Gators defeated University of Kentucky 29-21 with 19 fourth quarter points. Wildcat QB Sawyer Smith was locked in to begin his first start for the Wildcats, completing his first 9 passes. Both Smith and Florida QB Felipe Franks started off really hot in the first half as the Wildcats took a 14-10 lead into halftime. Franks went down with a dislocated ankle at the end of the third quarter and Gator backup Kyle Trask started off 4-4 and led the Gators to three fourth quarter touchdowns to steal the game. Chance Poore had an opportunity to put the Wildcats up with 58 second left in the game, but the field goal attempt sailed right. As Florida was running out the clock, the Gators Josh Hammond exploded for a 76 yard touchdown run.

The fourth quarter doomed the Cats as Florida put up 19 points in the final quarter. Florida’s Trask came in hot and got the Gators moving down the field and with the Wildcat offense stalled, Kentucky had no answer. Sawyer Smith did lead the Cats down the field to set up the short field goal, but once the kick went wide. That was all the Kroger Field capacity crowd needed to see before heading to the exits

Smith was solid in his debut start, finishing 23-35 for 267 yards and 2 TDs with 3 INTs. He also rushed for a Wildcat touchdown. The defense was solid for most of the game, but when crunch time hit, the Cats seemed to play not to lose while the Gators rallied around their backup quarterback and seized momentum. The Wildcats fall to 2-1 on the season have to lament the one that got away.
