Folks, basketball is set to return. The NBA Board of Governors today approved a plan for a 22-team return with eight regular season games before the playoffs. This will be held in one site, Orlando, FL, at Disney and will go from July 31 to October 12.
According to multiple reports, the plan was voted in favor of by the overwhelming majority. The 16 teams that were already in playoff position will report to Orlando, along with six other teams that will fight for the final spot in the playoffs for their conference.
After training camp in July, they will compete in eight regular season games starting on July 31. If the ninth seeds are within four games when that regular season ends, they will participate in a play-in tournament with the eight seeds that is single elimination for the ninth seed and double elimination for the eight seed. If the ninth seed is outside of that range, the eight seed gets the spot automatically.
The six teams outside of the playoff picture right now are New Orleans, Sacramento, Portland, San Antonio and Phoenix from the Western Conference and then Washington from the Eastern Conference. The plan for the teams that did not make it is still being discussed, although the census seems to be that they will report to an offseason training camp of some kind at some point.
The NBA Draft also now has a set confirmed date which will be Oct. 15, while the lottery will be held Aug. 25. This all comes as the thought that maybe the NBA season forever will be pushed back a few months will surely be discussed.
