UK Football is officially on its way back!
Earlier this morning, Matt Jones of Kentucky Sports Radio reported that UK Football players would be returning on June 8, and this afternoon UK sent out a press release confirming Jones’ report. The players returning to campus on Monday, June 8, will be those that have continued to live in Kentucky throughout the pandemic, which will be about 50 players all of whom have been medically cleared to return.
The following week, on June 15, players that are coming back to play another season at UK will return in the same fashion. Then, on June 22, newcomers will then report to campus also once medically cleared. All three groups will be tested for antibodies to Covid-19.
The press release also said that the only staff that will attend the voluntary workouts are Athletic Development and Performance staff essential to the safety of the players. That includes athletic trainers, strength and conditioning staff, and the nutrition staff. The rest of the staff, including coaches, will continue to work from home as they have since the University of Kentucky closed down due to Covid-19.
UK Athletic Director Mitch Barnhart’s statement on the return in the press release:
“We will not compromise the safety and well-being of our student-athletes in this process, taking all possible precautions. Once we take this important step in returning to activity, we will shift our focus to preparing to return to play and bring the entire UK family — student-athletes, coaches and fans alike — back together this fall in a responsible and safe way.”
This Monday will be the first time the team has officially met on campus, although not yet in full form, since early March as the idea of having a season in some fashion has become a reality as of late.
