After a 6-0 start to the 2020-21 season, UK Athletic Director Mitch Barnhart announced today that Kyra Elzy is now officially the women’s basketball head coach, removing the interim tag placed on her following Matthew Mitchell’s retirement.
“This is a big responsibility and I’m ready,” Elzy said. “It still hasn’t sunk in, but I will get there.”
The Kentucky native was named interim head coach after Matthew Mitchell unexpectedly retired on Nov. 12 following emergency brain surgery over the summer. She has spent time on both Kentucky and Tennessee’s staff as an assistant and associate head coach, returning to Lexington 2016.
“This year is for you coach (Mitchell),” Elzy said recollecting on the UK coach’s leadership.
The Cats added to their perfect record Sunday night with an 88-54 victory over Samford, and look to continue building momentum against No. 24 DePaul on Wednesday.
