What once looked to be a promising 2021-2022 Kentucky basketball roster has now turned into a literal question mark.
Just a month after signing and being named a McDonald’s All-American, five-star point guard Nolan Hickman decommitted from Kentucky and reopened his recruitment. Hickman’s father told Kentucky Sports Radio’s Jack Pilgrim that homesickness and the moving of former assistant Tony Barbee attributed to his decommittment.
Without the five-star, UK now has just one scholarship guard on the roster (Davidson transfer Kellan Grady) and no for-sure targets from the portal or in the 2021 class. The Cats are considered a finalist for Illinois transfer Adam Miller, who announces his college decision today, but many recruiting services are predicting Miller to pick LSU.
Now, UK Head Coach John Calipari could very well have something up his sleeve — another player from the portal, 2021 four-star guard TyTy Washington, or maybe even Miller in a surprise flip. Of course, considering it is Kentucky basketball, they will find at least one or two more guards to fill that void. Plus, many folks around Lexington are still confident in grad transfer Davion Mintz returning for another year.
But, this trend is definitely alarming, and the Cats could find themselves scrambling for another strong guard soon.
